Why Cape Town businesses are moving their phones to VoIP

Answer calls from anywhere.

Your office number rings on desk phones, mobiles or laptops, so calls don't go unanswered when staff work from home.

Keep your existing number.

In most cases your current number can be ported across, so clients keep calling the number they know.

Lower, clearer costs.

Pay for lines and calls on a simple monthly basis instead of maintaining an ageing PABX.

What can we set up for your office?

All services run on Switch Telecom's network and are set up and supported by our team.

Hosted switchboard (PBX)
A full office switchboard in the cloud: extensions, call transfer, hunt groups and voicemail, with no PABX box to maintain.
VoIP lines
Individual business lines for smaller offices or single users.
SIP trunks
Connect an existing on-site phone system to VoIP without replacing it.
Number porting
Move your existing numbers across so nothing changes for your clients.
Microsoft Teams calling
Make and receive normal phone calls inside Teams.
Call recording
Record calls for training, quality and dispute resolution.
Professional voice prompts (IVR)
Recorded greetings and menus: "press 1 for accounts".
Toll-free and international numbers
0800 numbers and local numbers in other countries.
Teleconferencing and fax to email
Conference bridges, and faxes delivered to your inbox.
Desk phones and handsets
Bought from us once-off and set up remotely before delivery, so they plug into your existing network points. They're yours once paid for.

Will VoIP work on our office network?

Most call quality problems (echo, drop-outs, robotic voices) aren't caused by the VoIP provider. They're caused by the office network: an overloaded router, the wrong switch, no traffic priority for voice, or no backup power. That's the part we check and manage.

Who does what

Who does what when you switch to VoIP?

The line

Switch Telecom provides

  • The VoIP service and phone numbers
  • Call rates and monthly billing
  • Line and service support

Everything on your side of it

Poseidon Network Systems provides

  • A network readiness check before anything changes
  • Handsets set up remotely before delivery, ready for your existing network points
  • Voice traffic prioritisation (QoS) so calls stay clear
  • UPS backup so phones keep working during power cuts
  • Number porting coordination and go-live
  • Any new cabling or switches through our installation partner, with us as your single point of contact
  • Ongoing support for your office network

You get one point of contact for the move. If something goes wrong afterwards, we'll tell you straight away whether it's the line or the network, and deal with it.

What happens to our phones in a power cut?

VoIP phones need power at three points: the internet router, the network switch and the handset. We fit a correctly sized UPS so your switchboard stays up during power interruptions, and we can set calls to divert to mobiles automatically if the office goes offline.

VoIP questions we get asked

Can we keep our existing phone number?

In most cases, yes. Your number is ported from your current provider to Switch Telecom. We coordinate the request and schedule the switch-over so calls aren't lost.

What happens to our phones during a power cut?

Without backup power, VoIP phones stop working when the router and switch lose power. We size and supply a UPS to keep them running, and can set calls to divert to mobiles if the office goes offline completely.

How much internet speed do we need?

Less than most people expect. Each call uses a small, steady amount of bandwidth. Stability matters more than speed, which is why we check your connection and router before you switch.

Do we need new phones?

Not always. Some existing IP phones can be reused. If new handsets are needed, you buy them from us once-off, and we set them up before delivery so they plug into your existing network points.

Can we use our mobiles or laptops instead of desk phones?

Yes. Extensions can ring on a softphone app on a mobile or computer, as well as on desk phones.

Who do we call if something goes wrong?

Call us first. We'll work out whether it's the line or your network. Line and billing issues are handled with Switch Telecom; network, handset and user issues are handled by us.

What happens to the phone bill I send you?

We use it only to prepare your comparison. It goes directly to our team by email, is not stored on this website, and is deleted once we've sent you the result.

Is the bill review really free?

Yes. You'll get a one-page comparison with no obligation. If moving wouldn't save you money, we'll say so.

Is there a long-term contract?

No. It runs month to month after the initial term, with one calendar month's written notice. Handsets and network equipment are a once-off purchase.

Can we call emergency numbers on VoIP?

Yes, but don't depend on it. Don't rely on VoIP for 112, 10111 or 10177. Keep a mobile phone available. Calls may be delayed, and the call centre can't see where you are, so always give your address.

Are you the same company as poseidon.network?

No. Poseidon Network Systems (poseidon-network.com) is an IT and telecoms services company in Sea Point, Cape Town. We are not affiliated with poseidon.network or any blockchain or crypto project.
